EDMONTON, Alberta--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 17, 1999--Axion Spatial Imaging Inc. (OTC BB:AXON) in a world first, is providing up-to-the- minute location coverage of the Cable and Wireless attempt to circumnavigate the world in a balloon.

CW's balloon, which lifted off from Spain at 9:00 am GMT, is the second such attempt in the last two months. The first balloon piloted by Richard Branson, was forced to land Christmas day off of the coast of Hawaii.

Axion is providing interactive digital route maps on the Cable and Wireless balloon website, www.cwballoon.com. These maps continually track the balloon's last position and are downloaded to the web site for viewing. Using the Axion on-line Atlas, maps depicting entire continents right down to several kilometers will be posted. Catherine Barton-Smith of Cable and Wireless said, "On viewing the Axion on-line Atlas with its extensive database, it was a natural choice for us." Cable and Wireless expects to receive over 4 million hits a day on their website.

The ability to track the balloon allows viewers all over the world to participate in the experience. They can see the dangerous mountain passes of the Himalayas, vast stretches of water in the Pacific and the unforgiving terrain of deserts in Africa. Visitors to the site can follow the balloon and also learn interesting facts about the people and places 30,000 feet below the balloon's capsule.

Axion has developed software that achieves instantaneous downloads of even the largest digital image files. Using this technology, Axion has created the world's most comprehensive on-line digital atlas, containing 3D imagery, transportation routes, rivers, lakes, complete statistics on every country, and over 5 million names to search and locate.

Axion has used this software in the Axion 3D World Atlas CD-ROM and has also developed it for the Internet at www.axionspatial.com. Ian Basford, president of Axion Spatial Imaging Inc., added, "This is an exciting opportunity to show visitors the inventive ways in which our technology can be used. Working with Cable and Wireless, we have been able to create an informative and educational on-line experience."
