Elliott,

Whisper Numbers

From everything I have read, the whisper number is nothing more than someones latest guess on an estimate of earnings. That maybe why you think the number is closer to the actual because it comes out very close to the announcement.

My point that large institutional investors don't pay much attention to them is that (1) they are no more than another guess (2) all their analysis is done using the estimated number long before the announcement, and (3) the comparison is made between estimates and actual numbers.

It seems that daytraders put much more significance to the whisper number then investors because they view it as a guide in determining whether a stock may gap after the announcement. The whisper number is really nothing more then something else to talk about.

This is just my opinion from my reading.
