David,

<< The only drawback I saw was the internet connectivity via a cell phone, which needed a rather bulky cable connector like this one >>

I got a chuckle out of that ".jpg" photo of the iPaq connected to a mobile phone with 2 data cables joined by a DB9 to DB9 connector.

That is exactly the ******* kludged together arrangement I now use to connect a Palm Vx to an Audiovox CDM9000 CDMA tri-mode Verizon mobile phone.

One cable is from the Palm Travel Kit, the other from Audiovox, and the total cost of this necessary mess with the connector was $140.

Life was better 6 months ago.

Prior to upgrading to the Audiovox I used a Qualcomm QCP860 dual-mode Thinphone with a Qualcomm/Kyocera compact $99 leather Organizer (Measures 7 1/4" x 4 3/4" x 2 1/4") that includes an 8" cable (with a Palm Vx or III serial connector to mobile serial connector, & pdQ software), that holds the phone, the Palm, cable, and stores credit cards & passport. It is pictured here:

I have searched high and low for a Palm Vx to DB9 connector which would eliminate the 2nd cable, but haven't found one yet.
