Do you also have MSIE 4.0 installed on this machine?
One of the options it gives Win95 is to have your desktop and folders viewed as web pages. With this option, one mouse click will open folders or run applications; no more double clicking anywhere.

Just a wild guess that maybe this is why your e-mails open with a single click, instead of just becoming highlighted.
