Shell sees China, U.S. gas growth

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Investments of about $100 billion are needed over the next decade to build liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects aimed at meeting energy demand in countries like the United States and China, a senior Shell executive says.

The growing global LNG market was likely to lead to many suppliers and lower LNG prices, Shell Gas and Power chief executive Malcolm Brinded said Wednesday.

The Bush administration is holding a two-day meeting in Washington with 24 global energy ministers to increase attention on LNG, condensed gas shipped on tankers to distant markets.

The development of a global LNG market has been boosted by a wave of U.S. proposals the past two years aimed at plugging a gap between growing gas demand from power plants and lagging gas output from aging U.S. gas fields.

Shell, one of the world's top LNG players, is involved in several LNG projects around the world that represent 40 percent of the global gas liquefaction capacity, Brinded said. They include one of the biggest foreign direct investment projects in Russia.
