You know, actually I did that very thing when my mother was moving out of her house in Del Mar. She wanted me to toss all her old brokerage statements in the trash can. No way Jose, I said. I found a ceramic pot and started to burn them but that took too long and had the risk of annoying neighbors. Then I got the bright idea of putting them in a plastic garbage can, which I then filled with water, dog poop, dog food, and every disgusting thing I could find. After a few days I punched holes in the garbage can to let it drain. I don't think any bad guys were going to steal her identity after that.

I might take your suggestion seriously. We have a composter that we put kitchen scraps in. I think paper makes good compost too.
