The trick is to either stay out of the way, or protect Americans who own this country.

I take your point about the taxes and the lobbying and the immigration. There is certainly much to be done there. Where we disagree is with the best way to "protect Americans." I think Americans are better off if we let things play out more naturally. Kind of like the way we're holding off taxing the internet to give it a chance to become a big, fat goose.

Technology and "productivity" destroy jobs also.

I think in the long run we are best off if we learn to adapt rather than protect. Where we protect, we stagnate and fall behind. We can afford to fall behind even less than we can afford to lose jobs. Lost jobs can be more easily reclaimed. Falling behind leaves us with a long row to how.

All I'm saying is level the playing field.

I don't think that fairness is a good barometer any more than caring is. What matters is what works in the long run.

Re immigration, that fell by the wayside with 9/11. I was hoping we were going to do something about that. Now it looks unlikely, although there was some mention of it from the WH recently. Personally, I thought we needed a war on illegal immigration more than we needed on on Iraq. But that initiative was overtaken by events, for which we will likely pay dearly.
