It seems that Clinton et al (Rubin, Greenspan and every analyst in sight) have painted a very rosy economic picture for 1998. When the economy goes well, people forget other troubles (or scandals?). Just check Clinton's approval rating and try to understand. I also suspect that there has not been any bad news from Japan and probably won't be for the coming weeks because of Nagano Olympics. Bad for PR.
