How much oil do we have left?

Some time ago I read that someone calculated that the entire known volume of oil - everything that was ever used plus all known reserves - is equal to the volume of water in lake Tahoe. Granted it is a large lake, but looking from space it is just a tiny spec on the surface of the planet. The person who made this calculation speculated that since the total volume of the discovered oil is so relatively small in relation to the size of our planet, then maybe there are additional large amounts hiding somewhere out there.

I have no opinion about this - but it's a curious way of looking at the issue.

Why not start the switch over now. Let the ME have their oil.

There is nothing that can realistically replace oil - and the demand is growing. They are trying to crank up production from shale, coal, sands - but that will take many years. Without those tightly packed high energy liquid carbons the world could not go on. Malthus would have been proven right.
