Ads in chatspace are not a stroke of genius. They are a stroke of desperation.

I guess you don't mind looking at ads all the time. Some people do. In fact, I just sent a complaint to WSJ Interactive today that IBM's flashing RED and BLUE Bars on the Personal Journal Page is giving me such a headache that I plan to discontinue the service unless they discontinue it. I can't comment on AOL's ads since I no longer subscribe to the service.

Certainly AOL wants to have their cake and eat it too. Free content. Payment for subscriptions. Payment for transaction fees. Payment for ads. Minimal investment in network infrastructure.

I just happen to believe the market is becoming a bit too competitive to allow them all that. There are just not enough newbies around to keep filling AOL's plate.

Sooner or later, AOL users will sicken of the never-ending commercialization of AOL and the ads will just add to their churn rate.
