I use .DAT files quite a bit. When I make a new file that is little more than an original .DAT file with some minor change, I use .CAT .RAT .HAT .FAT .SAT .MAT .PAT or .VAT to keep them straight. (Batch files use .BAT) As you can imagine, the Plays well with others part of my employee evaluations were interesting.

DOS directory entries have room for 8.3 filenames. Windows long filename support has quite a bit more room for information about the file. I would have preferred that the name of the program creating the file be included in the directory entry, but when Microsoft decides how to do this stuff, they didn't ask me.

Cheers, PW.

P.S. Even a code would be nice. Example: dBASE data files all begin with (char)3. (Or so I think.)
