You're incorrect in your statement that most firms won't margin below $5 per share, most firms will allow a price decline to as low as $2.50 before an investor is forced to completely cover the negative balance, although it might be necessary to add some funds as the price falls and the "margin release" (percentage of credit vs. equity) decreases as a stock price falls from 5 to 4.75 to 4.5 etc. I assume what you are referring to is the price at which you can initiate a margin transaction, and yes, that is typically $5 per share.
