CJ, I have 1-2-3 and have in the past opened xls and 123 files in either of them. So it can be done. It could be that one program is much older than the other. It would be best if your friend could tell us HOW he tries to open your file. The best way is to open Excel, click OPEN and choose the folder the xls file is in AFTER choosing xls in the box that popped up.

Or you can just send a 123 file. Excel can handle it, providing the friend again chooses '123' as the file format to be opened.

PS: try to open the xls file you made with 1-2-3, to make sure of its integrity.
