The energy of the democratic party that I see locally comes from middle age technical professionals, especially when there is a large influx of immigrants involved. The communinity has a large membership from India, China, and Russia as well as many other places. Not all are citizens, so not technically democrats, but the citizens who work and live in this environment are used to people from other cultures and are not so afraid as republicans.

Still, that is not the group that generally controls the party machinery. That group is perhaps more tied to LBJohnson, - older but not so old as the FDR supporters.
