Or maybe, to be more realistic, it's a great indicator that 3g will never satisfy anyone (consumers, businesses, regulators, operators or gearmakers).

i was under the impression that the japanese and koreans were big cell phone nuts.

Even if that's true, which I doubt, 3g may still never get built. 3g will have to stand (or fall) on its own merits. So far, so bad...

1x is built. that's 3g? i don't understand your comment.

Looking at the overall numbers for the quarter....it looks like KDDI managed to gain back some of the marketshare that they had lost. Nothing dramatic, but their performance was certainly better during the first quarter '02 than during the fourth quarter '01. Overall, March saw a rebound in the number of new subscribers for all of Japan. That was probably the reason for the big jump in FOMA users as well.

are you sure KDDI took share? What was NTT's overall net adds? That was probably larger than KDDI's 278,000 adds

latly j-phone had been adding more users than KDDI.

Besides will this be the first time that Koreans making their way into Japanese market?

The Koreans are doing what the Japanese did in the 80s. Look at the Korean cars.

isn't KDDI launching the same EV-DO technology that LG said wasn't worth it? you have to wonder if the real reason is that LG doesn't have the capital to upgrade.

I think it is becoming apparent that 1x EV-DO is going to be launching around the world in 2003 if not sooner (as long as the capital markets don't shut down and carriers find it impossible to raise funds). Verizon is already messing with 1x EV-DO in Washington, correct? What does Cingular or AT&T do when Verizon and Sprint have 1x EV-DO in 50% of their markets by the end of 2002? The Europeans? They won't have anything that compares to 1x EV-DO by xmas of 02. I know I'm going on a limb and saying Verizon will have 1x EV-DO, but they are already working with it and KDDI just launched a 1x network and will now be upgrading to EV-DO?

Now the question is, do consumers and businesses want 3g data?
