Nadine, Yes they have been shelling Sderot but they've been using home made junk as far as I know. They have to get in real close. And some residents in Gaza have been complaining. There was even a demo was there not?

No, it's extremely relevant as long as they keep funding Arafat. The only way to really get different behavior is to get Brussels, Riyadh and Damascus to cut the funding

I agree their funding is very important but will they fund Arafat to start a real war? With a wall in place how else can he attack Israel?

What's his relevance if he can no longer attack Israel on the cheap? He's not capable of direct attack and hasn't the means and neither have Hamas and Hezbollah. This is why they're complaining about his latest move - sure it sort of looks like a retreat, but if it is one, why aren't they gloating?

But the Palestinians are terrified of a civil war, and the only recipe they have for avoiding one is to keep shooting at the Israelis.

But it looks as if shooting at the Israelis is about to become a lot more costly in terms of damage and lives lost.. Sniping and suicide bombing is one thing but direct attack and its consequences is another - that requires a military footing and they aren't set up for that and no amount of money from outside is going to change that reality. Sharon is taking away the advantage of asymetrical warfare.

Arafat is terrified of a civil war because he won't be controlling everything. Worse, the civil war would be between his forces and the Hezbollah types and he might lose or be killed.

According to Shikaki's polls Palestinians aren't very enthusiastic about Arafat or the other major players in their society - because they're corrupt and despotic - so apart from the real concerns about physical safety how upset would they be to see the two sides shooting each other?
