Following Steve's thoughts--what pointing device are you using? With my Logitech mouse I can set any of the the buttons for doubleclick action with only a single click, very handy most of the time but potentially frustrating if you're only trying to highlight something. My biggest problem with that happens when I'm trying to organize my favorites in IE4.

With IE4 you can also set your mouse for doubleclick action by going to Start\Settings\FolderOptions\General, at the bottom of the General tab there is a Settings button where you would find the doubleclick option. Maybe this is still left over from your IE experience?

Anyway I hope this helps.
