What I remember about Bush Sr. is that he went against his party and against his "read my lips" pledge and raised taxes to attempt to fill some of the huge Reagan debt hole, an act of political courage that cost him a second term. His son, unfortunately, took all the wrong lessons from that episode. I also was against his Gulf War I, but appreciated over time that he arranged it so others paid for it, got REAL international support, and didn't leave us stuck there as his son did. I didn't vote for him, but he showed that decent 1 term president beats a bad two-termer every time.
