Dear Fpg:

Sorry to burst your argument, but Socket 939 gives up 2 16/16HT ports for unbuffered dual DDR channels. To unbuffer the DDR channels requires 2 copies of the clock and addressing pins per channel. There are enough unused pins for a 16/16 HT port, but AMD reserves them. The extra drive also helps having more faster DIMMs per channel. But there are few, if any, 939 MBs with six DIMM slots.

As for AM2, adding separate power planes and DDR2 likely removed the option for a second 16/16 HT port although perhaps a 8/8 HT port could be added.

Pete

PS: The link for the AMD socket 939 pin out definition pdf seems to have gone missing, however any of the old 939 CPU datasheets still have the pinouts of the 939 socket.
