Yes, you're probably right.

Speculating here, I would think that the AT&T deal would make Gates more anxious to ensure a position within Roadrunner. AT&T has AtHome, and would get about 1/3 control of Roadrunner if they make the MediaOne deal. This has to make Gates nervous, and if he can get something significant in exchange for Maffei now, I would think he would want to jump on it. I can't help but wonder if Gates' public reluctance isn't feigned a bit, or at least exaggerated, in order to position himself in the upcoming deal-making, or maybe he really thinks Maffei is irreplaceable.
