Look at where Thompson is in the race! Look at the attention and money he is gathering! Why on earth should he declare a minute before he has to?

Well for one reason being in the race early on prepares and polishes a candidate. If republicans all hang their hat on Thompson - giving up on all the others - republicnas could be creamed if he should eventually come out and "bomb" at the last minute.
