Santa Clara, California, Oct. 5 (Bloomberg) -- Palm Inc. shares could continue to rise as its Pilot handheld computers enter the mainstream, the Wall Street Journal's Interactive Edition reported in its ''Heard on the Street'' column.

The Pilot should be a hot item for Christmas, Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. analyst Paul Sagawa told the paper. Sagawa rates shares of Santa Clara, California-based Palm an ''outperform,'' although he is bearish on the telecommunications industry.

Consumers are switching to handheld devices and it is only the beginning, Circle T Partners LP hedge fund manager Seth Tobias told the paper. Palm's numbers are getting better, prices are coming down and the number of units sold will go up, Tobias said.

Still, some investors say Palm is a hardware company with a commodity product and worry about the company's ability to maintain its market share as competition in the handheld computer industry increases, the paper said. (WSJ.com 10/5) For the Wall Street Journal's Web site, {WWSJ }.
