NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 12, 1997--
New notebook leads the company's mobile market product initiative
Gateway 2000, Inc., (Nasdaq: GATE), one of the leading marketers of mobile PCs, today began sales of the Gateway Solo(TM) 9100 multimedia notebook, an expansion of its award-winning Gateway Solo notebook line. As the new technology leader in the `mega' notebook class, the Gateway Solo 9100 multimedia notebook is a "no compromise" mobile solution boasting a number of industry-leading design features that bridge the gap between desktop and mobile PCs.
Technology Leadership
The Gateway Solo 9100 multimedia notebook clearly distinguishes itself as the technology leader with a number of state-of-the-art features. These include a high-powered Intel(R) Pentium(R) processor with MMX(TM) technology integrated on Intel's new Mobile Modules Operation (MMO) module, high-performance SDRAM memory with expansion capacity up to 192MB, 4MB of video memory standard, a 12-cell, 60WHr Lithium Ion battery pack, Universal Serial Bus (USB) and NTSC In ports.
The feature-rich and competitively priced Gateway Solo 9100 multimedia notebook also includes a 13.3-inch XGA active matrix TFT display, a combination CD-ROM and floppy disk drive for simultaneous operation, the Intel TX430 core logic chip set, a MIDI/game port and fast infrared support. Also supported are hard disk drive capacities up to 3GB and 32-bit CardBus interface.
"The Gateway Solo 9100 notebook targets the high-end of the mobile PC market - customers who want a premium product without compromises," said Ted Waitt, chairman and CEO of Gateway 2000. "It sets a new benchmark that existing industry notebook features and technology will be compared against."
Shared Components
The Gateway Solo 9100 multimedia notebook takes component modularity to a higher level through shared components with other members of the Gateway Solo family. The AC adapter and Gateway Solo docking stations are shared with the Gateway Solo 2100 and 2200 models. The Gateway Solo 9100 notebook will share components like batteries and memory with the next generation of the Gateway Solo notebook line.
"We try to protect our customer's investment by extending the product's life cycle, and to reduce the total cost of ownership by developing components that are interchangeable across the Gateway Solo family," said Dave Berger, director of product marketing for Gateway's Americas region. "This is a big plus for customers who standardize on Gateway mobile PCs."
In addition to Intel's MMO module, the Gateway Solo 9100 notebook uses a unique Modular Multimedia Board (MMB) in the notebook's design. The video and audio subsystems are placed on a modular daughter card that allows these subsystems to be updated independently of changes to the core notebook design.
"This higher-level of modularity will help Gateway to maintain its technological leadership position by allowing the company to introduce the latest technology as it becomes available," said Bob Burnett, director of Mobile Systems. "This will also allow Gateway to lengthen the product's life cycle without having to redesign the entire notebook - a major benefit to our customers." "By improving our modular design inside and out, we are strengthening our commitment in providing long-term mobile solutions."
