COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Arizona Sen. John McCain defeated chief rival and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee in the South Carolina Republican primary Saturday, cementing his status as a front-runner for his party's nomination. The focus immediately shifted to the next high stakes Republican contest, the Jan. 29 Florida primary.

"We have a ways to go, of course. There are some tough contests ahead," Mr. McCain said in his victory speech. "But, my friends, we are well on our way tonight. And I feel very good about our chances."
