Tales by Baghdad Diarist Are True, Magazine Says
NYT
By PATRICIA COHEN

In a note online, The New Republic said it had confirmed that all the anecdotes reported by the Baghdad Diarist, an American soldier in Iraq writing under a pseudonym for the magazine, had been investigated and confirmed. Conservatives writing at The Weekly Standard online and elsewhere had questioned whether the cruel incidents recounted by the diarist, Pvt. Scott T. Beauchamp, had occurred. "We spoke with five other members of Beauchamp's company, and all corroborated Beauchamp's anecdotes," as did other sources contacted, the statement said. The one inaccuracy, it said, was that a conversation mocking a disfigured woman turned out to have occurred at Camp Buehring in Kuwait, before the unit's arrival in Iraq.
