The difference between Kaiser and most other HMO's is very significant. Kaiser is a "staff model" HMO, which means that its MD's are employees. Most others are "pseudo-private" - with Doctors playing the part of independent contractors.

In many parts of the nation "staff model" options are not available. Kaiser gave it a shot in NY a few years ago, but somehow they run them out of town.
