Very sad indeed. Even sadder, the Israelis have not had any opportunity to negotiate with anyone but Arafat. One collection of dictators annointed and funded him in 1964, and since then he has perfected the art of manipulating or assassinating any opposition. And of course, all the other Arab dictators, who want the conflict to continue (what would they distract their own population with if it did not?), insist that Arafat must be maintained and protected no matter what his behavior.
