The state budgets maintain these bridges and i expect the money gets pulled each year for other vote getter projects. It gets to the point that some just get closed completely and we see for years detours around small bridges vs having them repaired. I expect in many locations the small bridges require a whole new structure to meet enviromental regulations of building something over a water way etc. I have seen several small bridges rebuilt in rural areas of pa. and they not are huge with all kinds of expansion around the area to catch run off from the road etc etc. It does seem like overkill but one can see why to repair just one small bridge the time and money that gets sucked up in them.

The answer also seems to be for state legislators is to sell roads ways and responsibility for repairs to private parties. It gives them a windfall to spend more money now and i wonder how they plan to enforce the private parties to maintain the road ways? To move these assets from public to private doesn't seem to accomplish a thing for the tax payer.

Dams are in bad shape people who live around them all know it. Each spring we see the problems of a potential dam that will break and flood a town , how many small private dams have broken and wiped out small developments.
