The problem with your statement is that most of these "Southern Christian conservatives" were, at the time Democrats. For example, Jesse Helms was a Democrat till 1970 (according to Time.Com).

My understanding was that for the most part "Southern Christian conservatives" did not "turn" Republican till Ronald Reagan.

Affirmative Action was (I believe) started during a Republican Administration. Republicans were rewarded by African American support of people like George Wallace.

You should realize that California is a very diverse state. I believe that NO ethnic group makes up a majority in the State. The biggest ethnic group in UCB and UCLA are probably asians (who historically, have suffered as much discrimination as anyone in CA), who may outnumber white students.
