Dave, When one has been trained for so long, and never gets to use that training, it can be frustrating. I was about the right age during the Korean "police action", but already had two kids, so stayed home. I was way too old for Nam.

Nam was not the usual type of war, and probably should not have been fought. As Josh said, the military leaders had their hands tied, and were forced by the politicians back in D.C. to follow their directions. Can you imagine a bunch of soft bellied congressmen deciding how to fight a war? Ludicrous to say the least. That got a lot of our guys killed that didn't need to die.

Your Dad did the duty assigned to him by the Corps. He served his nation as a good Marine that was ready for whatever he was asked to do. I know you are proud of him, and have every reason to feel that way.
