Citibank is a progressive retail institution so this doesn't surprise me. Once a client is tied in so much, very reluctant to change so having this as a loss leader makes alot of sense to me.

At Mellon Bank in Pgh, I believe they charge $9.95 for on-line banking while Bank By Phone is $3.50 to $3.95. In the final analysis, banking is a commodity business so the more you tie the customer in, the more chance you have of keeping them. With on-line banking including loans and ATMs, the brick and morter advantage will slowly dwindle. I for one have absolutely no allegience to any one bank and will do business with whoever and whatever can provide me with the services I need at the lowest cost.
