LAS VEGAS (Reuters) - Intel Corp. (Nasdaq:INTC - news) and Neon Technology Inc. said today that the companies developed a set-top box for high speed data transmission through advanced communications systems, such as ADSL and Ethernet.
Designed around the Intel Pentium processor with MMX technology, chipset and flash memory, the device brings the performance and quality of desktop computing through a cable television box, they said. ADSL (asymmetrical digital subscriber line) enables greater amounts of data to be transmitted through networks than traditional telephone lines -- a function useful for high speed Internet access, video conferencing and other multimedia uses.
All of Neon Technology's set-top products feature Web browsing and electronic mail and will support audio and video signals.
Neon also offers real-time Internet telephony with still- picture transfer, automatic registration, seamless on-line software upgrades, personalized configurations for multiple users and content filtering functions.
Neon Technology is a provider of Internet appliances.
