Low price most important to cell-phone service buyers

Though wireless companies are doing their darnedest to push cell-phone extras, such as Net
access and text messaging, buyers aren't biting--at least not yet. A new survey by the Yankee
Group shows that low prices and better coverage are the two most important factors to buyers
looking for a wireless phone plan. Phone upgrade programs come in third. Of the 2,000
cell-phone users surveyed, only 6 percent said Net access and text messaging would cause
them to switch plans. But it's not totally hopeless for these enhanced services: Though 45
percent of respondents said they did not want or need wireless data services, 18 percent said
they had used them--compared with just 8 percent when the survey was last conducted in
2000.
