I agree with you completely. As I have stated before, there are two issues related to SS that are getting mixed together:
1) "fixing SS" so that it doesn't start running red ink
2) converting a socialist system into a market-oriented one

Everyone on this thread is mixing the two, which is not a smart thing to do if you are against SS reform. If you are Bush, mixing the two is a VERY smart thing to do. He's using the crisis rhetoric to push wholesale replacement of the current system.

Whenever I talk about the SS reform debate, I have tried to separate the two. My opinions as follows:

1) SS does need to be fixed. At a minimum, they should cut benefits.
2) I believe an ownership society is a more efficient and effective society, than a socialist society. History is littered with failed socialist states (Soviet Socialist Republic ring any bells?). I am still heartily for the gov't forcing people to save, but I think it is criminal to put the savings into a general account, instead of tagging a person's contributions to their own social security number.
