Then I'll take the sum of the NPVs of those two and see if it is positive. If it is, then it's a good deal for the common man.

You may be correct. In which case I am all for it. This is why earlier I said I would like to see a plot showing ROR vs AIME. Under the current SS, I suspect it is excellent near the origin (low AIME) and very poor at high AIME. This is the plot that Bush & Co needs to show the public, then discuss why the modifications are needed, and show the new plot.

BTW, the whole time I have been bashing you, I understand a few additional points about privatization (within the fraction allowed anyway).

1) It solves the raiding of SS funds by Congress. It will be very difficult for congress to reach into private accounts which people have been watching grow over the years and consider their own, and expropriate the funds. Difficult but not impossible. It is difficult but not impossible for Congress to mend their current ways on their own too.

2) Ownership will keep people more involved with the entire SS system, and more likely to hold politicians accountable if things start drifting into trouble, in any manner.

3) I think longterm that some US retirement investments should be placed in developing regions of the globe. We owe the world a lot for T-bills, I would like to see the reverse. This hedges against internal economic issues wrt to growing foreign economies.
