Ericsson lands another D-AMPS order in Brazil
Ericsson has signed a major contract with Telet S.A. of Brazil for the
construction of a D-AMPS IS-136 (TDMA) digital wireless network covering the
State of Rio Grande do Sul. The contract is valued at USD 140 million (SEK
1,090 million) over a three year period.
Ericsson now has a 50% share of the B-Band new wireless operators' market in
Brazil. This current order covers Area 6 of the B-Band license areas. Eight
out of nine network operators in the B-Band areas, that have awarded
contracts, have selected to use the TDMA technology to provide the latest
digital services available.
Telet plans to begin commercial service in the city of Porto Alegre in January
1999. Telet S.A. is a consortium formed by Telesystem International Wireless
and Bell Canada International, both Canada based companies, plus Citybank
International, and a group of 11 large Brazilian pension funds and financial
institutions.
There are nearly 90 million subscribers using D-AMPS/AMPS networks worldwide.
D-AMPS was the first technology to be commercially available as a dual-band
(800/1900 MHz) and dual-mode (analog/digital) technology. Nearly 16 million
subscribers are already using D-AMPS digital services.
