Bangladesh: Submarine cable

[ skunked! ]

financialexpress-bd.com

The people were earlier informed that, after the installation of submarine cable, the speed of the local Internet connection would improve significantly. It was told that people would be able to use Internet faster than before and enjoy this facility at cheaper rate. At that time, it was also maintained that more than a fraction of a second would not be needed after the installation of the cable to transmit a message from one computer to another, wherever it is located, on clicking the mouse giving the command.

After a long wait for more than a decade, we were finally connected with the submarine cable at the end of the tenure of the four-party alliance government. Since then, we have, however, not observed any change in the Internet service, neither in speed nor in rate. Whenever I have looked at the billboards of different Internet service providers (ISPs) in the streets, the charges for Internet connection including the broadband are found to be unchanged, between Tk 600 to 1500, depending on domestic and commercial uses.

These ISPs now mention in their offers about submarine cable connection and its high speed. At present, they claim that they have to bear unnecessary additional cost because of non-installation of required supportive and back up lines, which are needed for effective use of the cable. So we do not know what is the reason for which we are still deprived of the faster Internet facility. Is it for the inefficiency of all concerned authorities in providing the right information to the users or something else?
