Major League Reading Steps Up to The Plate
Innovative, Educational CD-ROM Features Real Pro Baseball Teams
SAN MATEO, Calif., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Featuring real pro baseball facts and statistics licensed from Major League Baseball Properties, Major League Reading(TM) steps up to the plate as a creative alternative to traditional learning techniques. Developed by Sanctuary Woods Multimedia (Nasdaq:SWMC) as part of the company's Head Coach(TM) family of sports-based educational software titles. The innovative new CD-ROM helps children improve reading comprehension, spelling and vocabulary skills while leading their favorite teams to victory on the diamond. Designed to challenge reading skills of kids from ages 8-12, the activities cover a wide range of topics including everything from reading comprehension, vocabulary and spelling to placing paragraphs in the correct order.
``By bringing real baseball teams and scoring into play, kids become engaged in learning and are motivated to sharpen their skills,'' said Charlotte Walker, president of Sanctuary Woods. ``We believe that the way to interest kids in reading is to use subject matter that they are excited about. Major League Reading is packed with tons of Sports Illustrated Kids-style articles that play into this very premise.''
Major League Reading follows Sanctuary Woods' release of Major League Math(TM) Second Edition. It contains more than 1,500 articles packed with interesting information about real big leaguers, 2,500 activities, and more. As an added bonus Sanctuary Woods has included a free Pro Pack(TM) CD-ROM . Major League Reading Pro Packs provide users with an additional 750 articles and more than 1,000 activities about either the World Series(TM) games or their favorite All-Stars. Pro Packs are also downloadable from the company's web site at www.ah-hah.com.
To play, kids first select what pro team to play for and against, with multi-player capability allowing the user to either compete against the computer or against a friend. Four levels of difficulty ensure that both parties have an equal chance of winning. The player also has the opportunity to choose a four-, seven- or nine-inning single game or a best of five World Series(TM) in which each game last at least nine innings.
Once on the field, kids then select what kind of pitch to throw and, when at bat, whether to swing for a single, go for extra bases or try to drive the ball out of the park. The team's fate depends on how well the user completes a language arts activity based on the program's 1,500 articles. Plays unfold on a simulated Jumbotron scoreboard featuring high resolution, 3-D photo-realistic graphics that result in more than 240,000 animation possibilities.
The Coach's Corner allows players to receive instructions during game play in the following categories: Spelling, Vocabulary and Reading. The glossary allows kids to enter their own spelling and vocabulary words and have them appear in the game.
In addition, players can take a break from reading articles and completing activities during the game for a quick, arcade-style challenge. During each 60-second Power Up, kids have the opportunity to improve their team's fielding, catching and other baseball skills while refueling their power meters for the chance to belt a tape-measure home run.
Also included on the Major League Reading CD-ROM is dial-in access to AT&T WorldNet Service, AT&T's ``Internet for Everyone'' service.
The program is available for both Windows and Macintosh computers. System requirements for the former include 486DX/33 or higher; Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or higher; 4 MB of RAM (8MB of RAM for Windows 95), hard drive with 12MB of free memory, Super VGA monitor (64Ox48O, 256 colors) or better, sound blaster or compatible sound card and a CD-ROM drive. Macintosh users must have LCIII or higher, System 7.0 or higher, 5MB of RAM, hard drive with 12 MB of free memory, 13`` color monitor and a CD-ROM drive.
Scheduled to ship May 1, 1997 for an expected street price of $29.99, Major League Reading can be purchased at select software and general merchandise stores nationwide, through distributors or direct from Sanctuary Woods at 800-943-3664. Teachers versions that include special manuals and materials are also available. Information on the company and products can also be obtained at the company's web site located at ah-hah.com.
