I am certainly a firm believe in the benefits of fish oil and Omega 3.

There is plenty of good evidence that shows both ASA and omega 3 have beneficial roles in maintaining cardiovascular health.

With ASA that has been done with 81 mgs wherein lies the rub. The studies on colon cancer have been with around 325 mgs ASA.
If one takes around 325 mgs ASA daily, there seems to be a significant reduction in the incidence of colon cancer.

I have taken 325 mgs of ASA daily for 15 years with zero side effects, so I am certainly not going to stop now.

You quote some studies which show similar effects for omega 3s on colon cancer prevention-about a 40% reduction with time-very similar to the ASA figures.

But is it the same (approximately) 40% that were saved by ASA? How do you now that ASA and Omega 3 are not additive in their beneficial effects?

The only way to find out would be a very difficult prospective study with huge numbers and with 4 arms: A placebo arm. An ASA arm. An Omega 3 arm. And a combination ASA and omega 3 arm.

But the first 3 arms actually would be impossible ethically because of the well demonstrated cardiovascular protective effects of both ASA and omega 3.

So the only ethically permissible study would be a study comparing various doses of ASA and omega 3 in combination.

The whole issue is now complicated by the theme of ASA resistance where a certain percentage of the population may need a somewhat higher dose of ASA or another platelet inhibitor to recive the cardiovascular benefit of ASA.

Again no one with contradictions to ASA therapy should take it.

But for those who tolerate ASA and who like that warm fuzzy feeling, do not think of ASA as a drug. Just think of it as a herbal medicine derived from bark.
