As an outsider scanning the political threads on SI it is difficult for me to imagine a more polarized democracy than the USA. Probably the SI political threads attract the more polarized folks. Based on my experience most people aren't tremendously interested in politics and don't discuss the various issues of the day as vehemently as the posters on these threads, and as a result are a lot less "polarized" than the average political poster on SI.
