Ericsson wins GSM expansion contract in China

Ericsson has signed a USD 138 million (SEK 1,080 million) contract with Chongqing Telecommunications Administration (CQTA) for the fourth expansion of the city's GSM network

This is the city's largest expansion project to date. Upon completion next year, Chongqing's GSM 900 network capacity will exceed 1.6 million subscribers. Chongqing is a large city and an important center of economic growth as well as a driving force behind developments of the west and the southwest provinces of China.

"Advanced communication services can facilitate commercial, industrial and social developments in the city and the Southwest China. Ericsson is committed to being a good partner to the operator, government and people of Chongqing," says Jim Gill, Executive Vice President of Ericsson China.

The Ericsson joint venture Nanjing Ericsson Communication will supply the solutions within the contract to the CQTA network. Ericsson signed its first GSM contract with CQTA in 1995 and has since then undertaken three further expansions for their network.

Ericsson China has more than 3,500 employees, 23 offices in different parts of the country and 9 joint ventures that provide a full range of communications solutions and services.

Ericsson is the leading provider in the new telecoms world, with communications solutions that combine telecom and datacom technologies with the freedom of mobility for the user. With more than 100,000 employees in 140 countries, Ericsson simplifies communications for its customers - network operators, service providers, enterprises and consumers - the world over.
