Maliki may have taken a huge step towards ending the insurgency while dispensing with Sadr. If so, Congress may hear in September that significant progress has been made both politically and militarily -- and that we can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Lordy not that light thing again.

I was at Ft Benning in fall of 1967 when LBJ visited and told the first lie about the light at the end of the tunnel.

That light must have gone out, because a few months later (Feb 68) SECDEF McNamara resigned. That was followed in April 1968 by LBJ's refusal to seek reelection.

If anyone sees a light at the end of the tunnel today, I'll need a thorough explanation and analysis of the source and intensity of that light to believe it.
