Schroeder: Bush Backs Payment Plan The Associated Press Thursday, March 29, 2001; 9:29 p.m. EST WASHINGTON –– German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said Thursday that he got assurances President Bush backs a Clinton administration agreement to compensate Nazi-era forced and slave laborers. And attorneys said they will drop a lawsuit partly responsible for holding up those payments. At issue is a July agreement in which Germany's government and industry set up a foundation to pay $5 billion in compensation to some 1 million former forced and slave laborers and other Holocaust victims in return for what they called "legal peace" in U.S. courts. The agreement, negotiated with a number of governments, businesses and victims' representatives, said the U.S. government would seek dismissal of survivor lawsuits already pending in U.S. courts and discourage courts from accepting new ones. ............ © Copyright 2001 The Associated Press Regards, jttmab
