User companies are interested in the total installed cost of a component part. This includes the price of the part, the labor and machinery costs associated with installing the part, any wastage of parts in installing them, costs of testing, and reliability. The recent article in Forbes pointed out that some of these will be cheaper with Hutchinson product, which seems reasonable. However, the article was a "puff" piece, and the reporter apparently did no independent investigation of HTCH claims. Disk drive makers will go with the lowest total installed cost, which I suspect will be in INVX favor, but we can't be 100% sure of that. I have not seen any reliable weighting of these different factors in a discussion of the alternate technologies.
INVX huge volume gives them a big manufacturing cost advantage ( the rule of thumb for most industries being that every doubling of volume gives a 10% to 12% cost advantage)
