Giuliani Punditry [Ramesh Ponnuru]
Last night on Fox, Krauthammer said : "Everybody expected six months ago that, yes, he was high in the numbers because people associate him with 9/11. But when Republicans discover how socially liberal he is, his numbers will plummet. And they have not.And people, I think, are aware of his positions on abortion, et cetera, and I think that the answer is that Republicans are grown up, and they understand that a president is not going to have a revolution in social affairs."
You would think that by now everyone would be aware of Giuliani's position on abortion, but the survey data don't indicate that they do. The latest numbers are from Pew, and they show that only 41 percent of Republicans could identify Giuliani as the pro-choice candidate in the race. (A slightly screwy way of putting the question, I think, but still a finding that tells us something.) Presumably knowledge of his support for amnesty and gun control is even more rare.
Now it may be that people who don't know Giuliani is pro-choice now are paying so little attention that they're never going to learn it, and it may be that they may find out and not care. But a lot of Republican voters, it seems safe to say, do not know that Giuliani is pro-choice—as surprising as that may seem.
