I have no doubt that Bush wants to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

We were discussing an attack on Iran, which I think unlikely. An attack on Iran at this point would only set back, not eliminate, Iran's nuclear weapons timetable. It would coalesce domestic support behind MA and the nuclear weapons effort at a time when that support is rapidly collapsing, mainly because of soaring inflation and rampant unemployment. It would completely eliminate whatever diminutive chance exists of stabilizing Iraq. In short, it would be pointless and counterproductive.

Have you noticed the recent statements coming from Khameini and from senior figures in Iran's parliament, suggesting rather strongly that MA shut his mouth and concentrate on domestic affairs? I assume that you heard of this report issued by Iran's Parliament:

It makes perfect sense to ratchet up pressure and keep Iranians aware of the potential consequences of irrational actions. It makes sense to openly discuss stronger sanctions. It also makes sense to make it clear that good behaviour will be rewarded, and that Iran gains absolutely nothing by building bombs and supporting terrorists.

I'm afraid that dropping bombs would make no sense at all, at this point. I'm sure Michael Ledeen thinks otherwise, but he doesn't have quite the credibility that he had in 2002.
