Unless there is a company handbook that details the conditions under which a person can be fired and it is limited in such a way that this firing was against it, it is perfectly legal. Political affiliations aren't one of the protected cases, not like race, religion, sex or age.

In most states, there is nothing preventing an employer from requiring all women to wear skirts and the men to wear coat and ties. Or everyone to shave all of their hair off as a condition of employment. Or have body piercings. Or tattoos. Most employers respect their employees and won't do stupid stuff, but there is no legal requirement for them to do it.
