To Wayne: I don't have a problem with a company being concerned about their stock price. I do have a problem with obsession (imo) regarding the stock price. GIFS has been successful at getting their stock price up, but only temporary. That's not what most shareholders want.
I don't know how you would hedge GIFS stock. There are no options on this one and it doesn't follow the market so there is no point in buying or selling index futures. I prefer to hedge my portfolio by having some longs and shorts. For example I might be long on CSCO but short on BAY. Or I might be short NSCP while also long on say ASND. This way if the market takes a turn for the worse I will minimize some of my losses with my shorts. If the market continues higher some of my shorts will go down anyway because of excessive valuation, deteriorating fundamentals etc.

C.C. (by the way I'm not calling myself GIFS short anymore because it has declined to near 1 1/2, a supportive level)
