Pelosi's strategy

Betsy's Page

Nancy Pelosi is quite open on what the Democratic plan has been for the past few years: be negative on everything.

<<< To get the chance to do this, Pelosi said, Democrats hatched a plan shortly after President Bush won re-election in 2004 to wage a campaign to bring down Republicans. They asked a group of marketers: "If you are No. 2 and want to be No. 1, what do you do?"

Pelosi said the marketers told Democrats that they "could not overtake the leader by just saying you have a good product. You have to pull them down first." And to do that, Democrats had to keep the focus on Bush and the Republicans who control Congress.

Strategy of attack

"You don't have a majority anyplace. No prospect of even bringing a bill to the floor, much less winning a vote on anything," she was told. To compete with Republicans on Election Day, Democrats "had to pull them down first."

That kind of tough talk sounds a lot like Powell's battle plan in the Persian Gulf War. "First we're going to cut it off, then we're going to kill it," he said of the Iraqi army.

So instead of pushing their ideas for the management of this nation, Democrats spent much of the past two years knocking what Republicans did — from efforts to privatize Social Security, to the mishandling of Hurricane Katrina relief, to the war in Iraq. >>>

I still think that pure negativism is not going to win overall. The only reason they have a solely negative message is that they can't agree on any positive plans and they know that most of what they would like to do if they were in control does not have popular support.
