Good analogy - I had forgotten that aspect of the Compaq disaster until your post.

Another problem for DEC is that, if Intel decides to make a protracted fight of it [or at least takes that position], DEC may find itself tying the company's very raison d'etre to prevailing in the lawsuit. Look what happened to Lotus and Apple when they assumed the courts would save them. They wasted valuable time they could have spent redirecting their businesses, failing to do so because of their illusory pots of gold at the end of the legal rainbow.
